Salvaging the Gold from HMS EDINBURGH

08/10/2021 19:00 - 21:00

Hornet welcomesHaslar Yacht Club to this joint event..

On 2nd May 1942, after three days of attacks by German submarines, destroyers and aircraft in the Barents Sea, the mortally wounded cruiser HMS Edinburgh was served her coup de grace by a torpedo fired from one of her escorting destroyers, and slid from sight beneath the waves.

The sailors onboard had been saved, but a cargo of four and a half tons of gold bars, carried in the cruiser’s bomb room, went to the bottom with her.

Join us for an enthralling evening with Mike O’Meara – who was Senior Diving Supervisor on the recovery vessel Stephaniturm, to hear why HMS Edinburgh was there in the first place and the political scenario around it, how gold was located and the incredible feat of bringing it to the surface.

19:30 – 21:00 Salvaging the Gold from HMS Edinburgh talk by Mike O’Meara Chairman of the Historical Diving Society
