Second hand boat sales between UK and EU to cost more

Post Construction Assessment required

Owners and brokers of second hand boats who want to sell between the UK and the EU will have to pay between £500-£5000 for a Post Construction Assessment.

The vessel has to meet the obligations set out in either the Recreational Craft Directive in the EU or the Recreational Craft Regulations in the UK. This will require either a new UK Conformity Assessed mark in line with the requirements of the RCR or a recertification of the CE mark when being placed on the EU market. Both require a Post Construction Assessment and third party verification, which costs between £500 and £5000, dependong on the vessel.

The new rule applies immediately to those importing second hand boats from the UK to the EU, and those importing boats from the EU to be placed on to the UK market have until 1 January 2022 to comply.
