RNSA HSSC Spring Series Race 5 Results

From Ric Hanslip:

Wind at last. After the disappointment of the previous weeks very light airs race breeze was most welcome despite the chilliness of the North Easterly on offer.
A very brief mix up over SOOD saw a course set of a run to Mother Bank, reach to Kemps Quay and a beat home, selected after the wind flicked more Northerly. Sunshine won the start by not initially hoisting her spinnaker but picking the nearest line to the “ODM” gaining several boats lengths on the others who chose to set kites inshore with wind and tide advantage. The run was not uneventful with the asymmetric boats sailing high and fast, Sunshine in the middle whilst the big masthead kites of Kudu and Wizard trundled low in a direct line to the mark. The wind went back Easterly and after a gybe to cross ahead of the marine hotel in the main channel Sunshine rounded Mother Bank clear of the chasing pack. The planned reach to Kemps Quay with the wind shift, turned into a close hauled on port leg with a short tack at the end to lay the buoy and another close hauled leg on Starboard to the finish. When the numbers were crunched the first 3 boats were all within a minute of each other giving some confidence in the handicap system.
The warming pie and curry back at Hornet was most welcome for the small fleet which is hoping to see an increase in its numbers shortly when the competitive Danegeld completes her refit.
