HSSC RNSA Summer Series Race 1

From Ric Hanslip.

The forecast was for the 10 knot Westerly breeze to fade totally as the evening wore on, common Summer conditions. The SOOD therefore opted for a short course twice round with an option to shorten to one round if the breeze failed. A run from the first turning mark Greenings Fin Tech to Baker Trayte Marine and a beat back, twice round. The added spice was the shallow water of Monkton Patch on the Northeast corner of Gilkicker point to test Navigation skills and trip up the unwary.
Sunshine joint scratch boat with Jolly Jack Tar led off the line on Port just crossing JJT who opted for the starboard end. Around Greenings Fin Tech a bit of a tidal gate kites were set for the run down to Baker Trayte Marine, once round this buoy the trick was to stay in shallow water out of the tide but not venturing too close to the dreaded patch. The fleet sailing upwind all managed this successfully however on the second downwind Spirit of Kudu who was well up on handicap edged just a fraction too close and found the mud. She soon sailed clear however but was left rueing what might have been as she set off after the others.
Sunshine took the bullet followed by Jambo and JJT with Wizard in need of some kite hoisting practice falling in behind Kudu.
