By Ric Hanslip:

A brisk South-westerly wind gusting to 18/19 knots set the scene for the opening race of the summer series. With Jetpack hors de combat the SOOD duty was taken on by Sunshine who opted for a windward / leeward course with a 2.3 mile beat with a favourable tide to Quarr off Wooton Creek and a run home   The tidal conditions for once not disadvantaging the smaller yachts.

Although 2 starts were planned with a 14-yacht entry, only 8 boats made it to Gilkicker so the starts were combined. At the gun Option hit the line at pace with Sunshine, Kudu and Cutlass in line abreast half a boat length further back, however by the ODM Stokes Bay East, Sunshines slightly better speed saw her edging ahead at the start of the beat. The beat provided several options but at the windward mark it was handicap order of Sunshine, Cutlass, Jambo with Option and Kudu not far behind. >span class="NormalTextRun SCXW245620125 BCX0">ultimately favoured the slower boats with wind gusts coming down the Solent from the west whilst the leaders sailed into a soft patch off Stokes Bay. Though Sunshine took the gun Spirit of Kudu had done more than enough to take the race on handicap with Jambo and Option not too far back. Kudu also took the chocolates in NHC so the system as intended immediately increased her handicap!

The pie with fresh veg back in Hornet was most welcome for the hungry mariners.
