The Met office forecast was spot on with the 10 knot south easterly moving to the south west as the fleet converged on Gilkicker at 1800 for the final race of the Summer Series. Alas for Ursus, the smallest boat in the fleet the forecast was also for winds to ease which they duly did and this with the tide turning to the west prevented a finish within the race time limit. Top marks for endurance however. Fortunately John the HSSC chef crewing onboard had able deputies to serve the pies to the rest of the fleet!
Being aware of the potential for the wind to fade Sunshine the SOOD set a short course of a beat to Motherbank, a run to Stokes Bay Central and a tight kite reach home. The three fastest yachts Sunshine, Cutlass and Brenda's J were smartly out of the blocks at the start with Cutlass just managing to gain an overlap at the first mark of Stokes Bay East on Sunshine with Brenda's J just astern. Cutlass started the beat a tad higher but with Sunshine a smidge faster. This changed as Sunshine found the right tweak on her headsail and she pulled away from her pursuers. A prompt hoist at Mother Bank extended her lead and with the wind easing as she approached the finish this gave her the final race of the series. The podiums comprised in IRC Jambo, Spirit of Kudu and Sunshine whilst in NHC Jambo, Cutlass and Spirit of Kudu filled the slots.
There is now a pause for boats to do other things, Cowes Week, crew holidays etc and we will restart Wednesday evenings with the Autumn Series commencing on the 21 August. Hopefully see you there.
A big thanks to the Hornet team who turn out on a Wednesday just for us; no complaints from Jo and Melissa last night serving the pie and chips to the crews who preferred the fresh air outside on the lawn to the rather warm clubhouse.
