HSSC Wed Autumn Series Race 1 Report
....and very Autumnal it was too! Fortunately the 18-20Knot south westerly was over an east going tidal stream so the wave pattern off Gilkicker point was relatively benign.
Sunshine the SOOD set a short course of a beat into the tide to Mother Bank, a run to Stokes Bay Central and a kite reach home.
At the start gun it was the two faster yachts Sunshine and Jambo fighting for the advantage of first boat to Stokes Bay East, always the first mark of any course to act as a line outer distance mark, and it was Sunshine the scratch boat in the fleet that led up the beat by half a boatlength. Cutlass (who clearly had affinity with Kew gardens) and Spirit of Kudu opted to tack and head towards the Island whilst Jambo followed Sunshine up the mainland side. At Mother Bank, the windward mark, Sunshine had made her speed potential count but only just and led Jambo around by a few boatlengths. Both boats hoisted immediately as the charge towards the gybe mark began and Sunshine at the gybe was just holding her time on Jambo. However the gusty conditions and a tighter wind angle were too much for both boats and Jambo with a smarter spinnaker recovery pulled back time on Sunshine sufficiently to take the race on corrected time. Meanwhile back in the pack Spectrum was sailing well and took the NHC win from Spirit of Kudu.
With an early mix up over catering not all boats went back to Hornet, hopefully this will not be an issue for the rest of the series.
