HSSC Wed Autumn Series Race 3 Report
A crazy night of Snakes and Ladders. The fable of the Tortoise and the Hare was also pertinent!
Lightning, the SOOD was sitting at Gilkicker point contemplating options. In the central Solent was a light northerly as forecast, at Spithead and off Bembridge a very light south easterly and in Stokes Bay and off Gilkicker - zero. What to do, an early bath perhaps?
Eventually Lightning decided that the south easterly would prevail and set a rare course to the east of Stokes Bay East, Gleeds, Linington off Southsea and home, with fingers crossed that the breeze was going to fill sufficiently to let the fleet get to Stokes Bay East before setting off down tide on the beat to Gleeds. It did!
The two fastest yachts Sunshine and Jambo sprinted clear at the start as all hoisted kites for the short leg to SBE and soon opened a significant gap on the rest. At Gleeds Sunshine led Jambo by a around quarter of a mile and rehoisting their spinnaker for the leg to Liningtons increased the gap still further. At Liningtons Sunshine opted to retain her kite and close towards the Haslar wall whilst Jambo much further behind opted to drop hers and head straight for Gilkicker. All initially went well with both yachts opening large gaps on the pursuing fleet until the big holes of nothing appeared ahead. Sunshine parked, Jambo parked, then the forecast northerly flicked in and the tortoises rushed rapidly towards the hares. Sunshine eventually got the breeze but too late, despite line honours and 7 minutes ahead of the next yacht it wasn't enough. Spirit of Kudu followed and saved her time whilst Spectrum the swift Impala did even better taking the race by over a minute on corrected time. Meanwhile poor Jambo previously the most windward of the fleet eventually picked up the breeze and got back for her bangers and mash.
