By Ric Hanslip:

A South South Westerly wind of around 12 knots and a honking west going tide to help the yachts up the beat produced champagne sailing conditions. Option the SOOD called one start for the 10 yacht fleet which created some excitement at the first mark Stokes Bay East. At the gun Sunshine though wooded by others further down the line was unsure as to whether or not she was OCS but opted to bear away and recross, however with her acceleration and pace she still managed to be inside and ahead at Stokes Bay East. The windward leg was to Mother Bank followed by Quarr and then a run home against the tide.  Sunshine rounded Quarr first followed closely by Jambo and a little further back, Cutlass. These first 3 opted to hoist spinnakers with a bear away set and make some easting in the shallower waters off Wooton before crossing the Solent whilst the pursuing pack mostly gybe set and aimed at the mark. As the wind eased around more to the west as the leaders crossed the Solent although the tighter angle gave greater speed this didnt outweigh the extra distance sailed and the pack behind the leaders made up good time. And so it proved, Spirit of Kudu with her ability to run fast and deep with her masthead kite took the chocolates from Jambo and Sunshine whilst in NHC Mike Shrives Ursus took first with Gopher Kicks and Option filling the other podium slots. The series nearing the halfway point is developing nicely.
