HSSC Wed Autumn Series Race 2 Report
Summer returns albeit probably only briefly, but it was sufficient to get the crews out in their shorts once again. The yachts who arrived early at Gilkicker for the second race of the Autumn series possibly did not expect to race. 3 knots from a vaguely south westerly direction did not inspire confidence, yet by the start time of 1830 the breeze had improved to 6-8 knots with more coming from the western Solent.
Jambo the SOOD with the forecast of the wind to go right and westerly set a first leg to Browndown, a broad reach to Fairhall West and a run home.
With the wind flicking briefly to the west the fleet on the line opted for a fetch into the first mark Stokes Bay East except for Sunshine expecting the breeze to continue going right positioned themselves at the leeward end of the line. For 5 minutes after the start the ploy worked with Sunshine in a position to tack and cross the fleet. Alas rather than going further right the wind came left to SSW and the boats to windward lifted on the new breeze with the high pointing Jambo fetching Browndown without having to tack. Sunshine followed her around a couple of boat lengths back and quickly made the advantage of her symmetrical spinnaker pay, however it was too little too late and though taking line honours she was never able to draw far enough ahead of Jambo to beat her on handicap. Meanwhile back in the pack Spectrum managed to wriggle free of the dirty air from several others and then sailed cleanly but closely covering Spirit of Kudu to take second in IRC by a mere 8 seconds from Sunshine.
