From Ric Hanslip:
The only yacht missing from the biggest fleet of the Autumn Series thus far was the rostered SOOD. Sunshine filled in with little notice so apologies from the organiser for the early error in the timing sequence as his wrist watch in normal mode was brought into play as he wrestled with course, sail selection, steering and VHF handheld to get the race away on time.
With the light due to fade early a short course of a very broad reach to Mother Bank a gybe onto a white sail reach to Kemps Quay followed by a beat back to the finish line was selected. With the wind from the north east gusting to 28 knots this would present a challenge to many in the fleet.
At the start Sea Nymph and Challenger were over eager to get to grips with the course and following the radio recall responded by returning to restart. Sunshine was the first to set a kite quickly followed by Jambo with the others opting for coloured sails hoisting as the conditions were fully assessed. Sunshine steadily surged ahead and at Mother Bank had developed a nice lead on Jambo who had to sail higher angles with her asymmetric kite. The beat with a fast east going spring tide was fairly swift for all yachts and fortunately the bigger gusts had eased as forecast. The final beat home into the harbour was a delight with the sun setting behind Gilkicker point.
Full marks to Mike Shrives and his team in Ursus who provided a cracking photo of the majority of the fleet astern of him, Ursus went on to take top podium spot in NHC.
A reminder that the start time for race 6 next week is 1730.
