Somewhat exceeding the forecast the 12 16 knot south easterly which kicked in late afternoon was most welcome for the small fleet gathered at Gilkicker for Race 4 of the Wednesday series.

Sunshine took on the SOOD duty and opted for one start though a late arrival of Lightning took the fleet to 9 yachts. The course selected was a broad kite reach to Browndown, a beat with the east going tide to North Sturbridge and a spinnaker run home. The start line gave several options. Hug the point off Gilkicker to be in less contrary tide, opt to be further out in a couple of knots more wind or as Sunshine did, pick a line at the edge of the shallows but in clearer air further out from the point. Jambo picked less tide but with a slightly stuttering kite hoist had to follow Sunshine with Brendas J a couple of boat lengths further back. Meanwhile the slower boats opted to stay clear of the inshore melee and go for the better breeze further out. At the leeward mark  and the start of the beat it was Sunshine leading from Jambo, Kudu and option, however a tussle was developing with the smaller yachts with Lightning, Ursus and Gopher kicks all approaching Browndown overlapped. Ursus held her nerve and opted for a late drop which gave her the advantage at the mark and a nice line to windward as she rounded the tidal gate. The faster tidal sections of the Solent were apparent from the increased sea state (wind against tide) and the leg produced some fairly bumpy conditions. Sunshine extended her lead on the Js but at the windward mark Sunshine split from Jambo at the start of the run opting to gybe set whilst Jambo went for a bear away set. It was touch and go coming in to the final mark before the finish line but Jambos final gybe created a snagging headsail which took seconds to sort out before the final short fetch to the finish. Enough to give Sunshine the victory on corrected time.
