Hornet SSC Weekly Dit Friday 13 February 2026
Published 13:18 on 14 Feb 2026
Ladies and Gentlemen, Members' Update. Following the message sent out on Wednesday 11th February, we have the 'Members Update' on Friday 20th February starting at 1730. To make the meeting more constructive, and for members to contribute to the Strategy for the Club (which is a living document), please find below the presentation we intend to deliver at the meeting. You will note the considerable time and effort your Committee have taken to analyse HSSC. This work was led by my predecessor before our hand-over as Commodore at the Trafalgar Night Dinner on 24th October 2025 using the SWOT management tool to identify Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. The Committee have elected to include this analysis in the pdf below which you will find from Slide 43 onwards. We will not be using the Annex slides on 20th February but we wanted you to see the results of our analysis. In order to help us prepare for the meeting your Committee would welcome any questions or comment. We are having an Executive Committee meeting on 17th February so it would be helpful if you could submit your questions or comments to me using my commodore@hornetservicessailingclub.org.uk email by then. However, we will also take questions on completion of each section of the presentation at the meeting. Members will note the green ticks on the slides to show the work that has either been completed or is ongoing. If you attending, and intend to eat afterwards, it would be helpful if you could please place your food order at the bar prior to the brief starting. Regards Mike Shrives Commodore
Tony Wardale. Tony passed away on the 24th January 2026 at the age of 92. Tony was one of the original members of the club and joined in 1964. He kept a folkboat in Titchfield Haven but being tidal if he was unable to get in he would moor alongside an old pontoon in the derelict HMS Hornet prior to the club starting. This worked very well until he was found out! His first berth was behind the Wykeham Martin family alongside the oil pier. As the family grew so did the boats - a Waterwitch was next and then in 1987 he bought Mikonda a Bowman 36 which he kept for 30 years alongside. Not wanting to give up sailing entirely at the age of 84 he downsized to a Westerley Konsort. Tony was on the Committee at Hornet on and off for 11 years and was chairman of RNSA Portsmouth. His funeral is on Wednesday 25th February followed by a wake at Hornet Clubhouse - enquiries to: wardalefamily@hotmail.com Closure of Haslar Road. We have received notification that work is going to be undertaken on Haslar Road, from Clayhall Road to South Street i.e. its entire length, from 16th Feb for 6 days, although on the website it says until 27th Feb. During this time the road is going to be 'closed to through traffic any (sic) time between from 0930-1600 on each of the days'. The notification also says 'access for residents and businesses will only be maintained if safe to do so. We are trying to find out if this will be phased or whether there will be complete closure for the entire period; we will inform you when we have clarity but please bear in mind during the period access may be problematic. Water Issues. Water is off on the following areas of the Marina;
Work is due to be completed on 17th February. Phone Problems. We are experiencing some intermittent issues with the phone system. This results in sometimes people dialling in will get the normal ringing tone but the phone does not sound and there is no indication. If you need to contact the Club and you are unable to get through please email the relevant area or use the mobiles for the General Manager 07988996411 or Marina Manager 07988996393. Please note, on Friday 20th February the clubhouse office will be closed in the morning but open in the afternoon onwards until the start of the members' update. | |
