An update from Richard Yeomans regarding the talk on Friday 26th June. 'Members enjoyed a joint meeting organised with the Royal Institute of Navigation to hear an excellent presentation about the National Coast watch Institution. The speakers, Ian Davis and Andy Wall, both senior manager and trainers at the Calshot and Stone Point stations which keep watch over the busy confluence of The Solent and Southampton Water. They provided a lively, well-illustrated and informative talk about: how they recruit and train their volunteers. They showed example of the wide range of activities they have to cover, from toddlers paddling to large merchant ships mixing with ferries and leisure mariners and even how they evacuate the Calshot Tower in an emergency (using a very tall cherry picker and hand casualties across on a stretcher, walking-wounded have to climb! From their great height they have a very long view and are often asked to assist clarify the picture by HMCG and Southampton VTS. The meeting was preceded by supper and followed by a lively question and answer session which then continued in the bar.'
