Hornet SSC Weekly Dit Friday 8 May 2026

Ladies and Gentlemen, We are pleased to inform members that a meaningful update to the Club Byelaws was approved at the recent AGM. This change affects Byelaw 2.3.1 (Berth Holder Membership), extending the distance criteria for Full Members wishing to hold a berth. Eligibility now applies to Full Members who are either currently serving in the Armed Services or who live within 50 miles of the Club. This replaces the previous 30mile limit and offers greater inclusion, particularly for members whose circumstances or home locations have changed over time. Extending the limit to 50 miles better reflects todays potential membership and helps ensure continued access to berthing while supporting the future of the Club. Please spread the word to any potential members who this change may benefit. The Marina Team have collected a number of ladders that have been left on FB3. If you have left yours there it may have been removed and located near the Marina Office. Please remove them before the end of the month, after which time they will be disposed of. Also found on FB3, Orca Sailing boots. In the Office so please come and collect if they are yours. We are fortunate in that we have a number of volunteers helping out in various areas of the Club. You will, I hope, notice the beds around the Clubhouse which are kept in amazing condition by Rowena Heale for which we are extremely grateful. However, she could do with some help so if anyone is willing to lend us their 'green fingers' please get in touch. You will be aware of the Coastal Forces Monument Appeal. To raise funds the Coastal Forces Heritage Trust are running a major Crowdfunding event over the weekend 8 - 11 May full details can be found below. Marina Water. There is a problem with the water in the centre of the Marina which is not going to be fixed until Wednesday. Pontoons A/B/C/D and slipway pontoon are unaffected. Limited Galley Service Sunday 10th May. Owing to staffing issues there will be a very reduced Galley service of a selection of sandwiches. Apologies for the inconvenience. Reminder of our upcoming May events;

Coastal Forces Monument. Were off! Today is the start of a four-day sprint on behalf of the Coastal Forces Monument Appeal to raise £100,000 to support the construction and unveiling of the Monument to the men and women of Coastal Forces and the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Hornet is the spiritual home of Coastal Forces, not just because the War Memorial is here, but through the whole ethos of the site. In the 1930s, the Admiralty encouraged amateur yachtsmen to gain sailing and powerboat qualifications so that if war came, those people could be called up to serve at sea primarily in Coastal Forces. We, the current tenants of the site, are their natural descendants. We owe them a lot. This Crowdfunding page is focused on Hornet past and present. Every donation you make over the next few days will be DOUBLED thanks to some generous match funders who have pledged £50,000 to this iconic monument. Please click on the link, watch the short film and do what you do best any amount gratefully received! Giving is fun, after all! | ||
