From Becky Walford:
For the Final race in the summer series we were met with very pleasant breeze, 8 to 12 kn from the west south west.
Sloppy seastate and watery sunshine.
The IRC class was "tight at the top " with three boats more than able to win the series. However, some of the entrants were missing due to the Fastnet or other commitments. Brenda's J had seen Sunshine fettling, they thought they would be out of prying eyes at Dolphin Pool. However, the Hornet Marina was also full of activity with the fleet getting ready.
We had a crew discussion about the course and eventually settled. The course was given early over WhatsApp, mindful of the cross section of the fleet and not wanting to be out in the dark!
The course was as follows and the race started on time at 1830.
5e port- WSC
51 port -Stokes Bay Central
5b port - Mother Bank
5d port - Kemps Quay
5e stb - WSC
Line
Distance 4.6miles
Most of the Fleet started on port with the wind being about 10 knots. The tide should have been taking the fleet over the line but didn't seem to be much as predicted.
Having passed Warsash Sailing Club, the fleet got into their side with separation beginning to take affect as it was a fetchish to Stoke Bay Central. The leg to Mother Bank was a beat with Brendas J Jambo and Sunshine crossing each other during the leg.
Having left Mother Bank to port the leg to Kemps Quay was a beam reach those with asymmetric spins enjoyed the ride. A gybe at Kemps Quay, made a run suited the symmetrical boats. A RORO ship caused a little concern as he paralleled the fleet on the reach, but thankfully did not cause any issues once Kemps Quay had been rounded. The final mark was Warsash Sailing Club to starboard. Tide seemed to be going the wrong way here......Sunshine lead the fleet with another gybe however Brenda's J managed to get an over lap on Jambo, gybed inside them at the mark and was second to finish on the water.
Meanwhile, in the YTC fleet, it was good to see familiar faces, a new winner in this fleet, Ursus, as Gopher Kicks was sitting this one out—— perhaps they knew they didnt need to partake as they had a perfect score line of first places and couldnt be beaten. Sadly Lightning had to retire due to gear failure.
Having put the boat back into cruising mode—— those fancy black sails only come out when the game face is on. The competitors retired to Hornet to eat legendary pies and chips .
Here we discovered that we have won the race and also the series. A good evening had by all.
Thank you to Joe and Danny for organising the series to the Hornet team for the great hospitality.
