The 3rd Wednesday evening race of the season was a longer affair than the previous 2, as a longer course was set to match the 15 - 20kts forecast. The fleet started at the club line, with a strong eastbound tide making for a long first beat to SE Ryde Middle. Sovereign had a good start and lead on the water at the first mark, closely followed by Jetpack, Sunshine and Jambo. The wind started to die during the long broad reach down to Mary Rose, and Spectrum, who had had a stellar windward leg, saw Spirit of Kudu and Lightning come flying past with a real turn of pace on the downwind leg. With all boats now fully transitioned to light wind sailing modes, the final short beat to the finish only provided one viable tactic, to make best speed upwind and uptide on Port and short tack the Gilkicker shore to get to the finish. Sovereign took line honours, but was pipped to the post by Jetpack and Sunshine on corrected time, with less than a minute separating the top 3 boats. The IRC fleet was tightly packed with less than 4 minutes corrected time separating the fleet! In YTC Lightning took the win, followed by Gopher Kicks. A wonderful (if long) evening on the water, see you all next week.
