HSSC WEEKLY DIT FRI 09 MAY 2025

Published 12:57 on 9 May 2025
Ladies & Gentlemen, I am delighted to report the success of the Commodore's Dinner and our VE Day Street Party. Both events truly highlighted what makes Hornet a special sailing club. This week, we have continued in the same vein, with our Wednesday Night Race series going from strength to strength, and the Hornet rally setting sail today to meet at the Folly, followed by Island Harbour tomorrow. The clubhouse is open as usual, so if you're not joining us on the rally, please come down and enjoy your club over the weekend. Brian
Commodore's Dinner & Melissa's Farewell The annual Commodore's Dinner took place last Friday, 2 May. Almost 50 Members and their guests enjoyed Chef Johns excellent menu of an Asparagus & egg starter, followed by delicious palate cleanser, a fabulous main course of Rack of Lamb or Ravioli, and with a "Chefs Grande Finale" to finish. In keeping with recent practice, there was no guest of honour. The Commodore gave a short speech which included a few observations from his cruise around Ireland last year, and also some Club matters, including the importance of ensuring membership is attractive to families and serving personnel. The Commodore also presented the Commodore's Cup to Tania Anderson for her exceptional contribution to the Committee for the last 11 years, including her time as Rear Commodore (House) in 2024. The final highlight of the evening was when the Commodore thanked Melissa Dear for her 16 years of stalwart and flawless service, and wished her every happiness in her retirement. Melissa was presented with a bouquet of flowers and an engraved glass vase. Melissa's last day at the Club will be Friday 16 May. Members are encouraged to come and say 'farewell and thank you' at lunchtime.

Marina Smoking and Vaping on Site The MOD have a no smoking policy on all sites. I'm pleased to report that this policy is largely adhered to by Hornet members. However I have been requested to reiterate that all users of the site including guests must not smoke or vape. There is a vaping shed situated at the rear of the JSASTC carpark behind the clubhouse. Smoking is permitted outside of the establishment by the main gate. Updated MAY 2025 Lift Schedule Please select the below link to view the the updated schedule.

HSSC / RNSA Spring Series Race 6 Exciting and unusual conditions were the theme for the racing this week, a deep spinnaker led broad reach to the first mark in Stokes Bay was quickly replaced by the doldrums as Sunshine, Jetpack, Challenger and Sovereign leading the pack found themselves adrift between the first mark and North Sturbridge. With the wind backing 180 degrees, a second spinnaker leg saw the slower boats quickly regaining ground on the leaders. With all boats rounding the formally windward but now new leeward mark in tight proximity. A final reach back to Warsash sailing club saw the IRC fleet fighting for line honours, with Sovereign first over the line for IRC, Spectrum taking her first win on Corrected times. YTC saw Lightning first over the line, but Ursus securing their first victory of the season on handicap. All still to play for as two races remain.

HSSC VE Day Street Party Despite the weather we had a huge turn out to Commemorate this Historic Day. It was a pleasure to see Members enjoy themselves and really got into the swing of the day with outfits from the 40's. Thank you to Bernard Clarke for taking some time out to reflect on Gosport and surrounding local areas War time History and to those who attended early to help set up, and as always to John, Melissa and the Team for working tirelessly throughout the day. The event really did bring out the HSSC spirit especially when it was all hands to implement our short notice wet weather routine. Please visit our Facebook page to see more images and videos.
